The thought of Chiguru pappu, as it is commonly called at home, makes my mouth water. How I used to miss it here in US. Thats the reason, I got some dried chinta chiguru leaves when I was coming back. They are not so sour, not so bitter and green in color with some reddish brown sprinkles here and there. Tender tamarind leaves are heavenly when used in either Dal, Pacchadi(Chutney) or Podi(Powder). These leaves are available during early spring to early summer (In India). That is the time to get them in large quantities and sun dry them for later use. Thanks to my Mother-In-Law for passing on the recipe of this lip-smacking pappu(dal).

Ingredients -

Chinta Chiguru (Tender tamarind leaves) 1.5 cups
Toor Dal (Kandi Pappu) 1 cup
Salt as per taste
Turmeric 1/4 tsp
Onion Chopped 1/4 cup (Optional)
Green Chillies 6-7 (or as per taste)
Seasoning (Oil 2 tsp, Mustard seeds 1 tsp, Urad dal 1 tsp, Jeera (Cumin seeds) 1 tsp, Hing couple pinches, 1 dried red chilli)

Method Of Preparation -

Gently separate the tender leaves from the tougher ones and wash them well.

In a pressure cooker boil Toor dal and chiguru. Alternatively both of them can be boiled on the stove top in a sauce pan.

While the cooker is cooling, heat a sauce pan and add oil and the seasoning. After the mustard seeds splutter and the urad dal is brown, saute the chopped onion.

After the onions are sauteed, add chopped green chillies ,turmeric, cooked toor dal, cooked tamarind leaves and mix well.

Add salt and let the dal simmer for couple of minutes and serve over hot rice and ghee.
