Holidays, Kids at home, Play dates, Snacks, Cleanup..Can life get any more tiresome? The main challenge is to make them eat a healthy snack. More so when a group of 8 yr olds meet, their last priority is to eat! But this time around, I planned on making some snacks for the kids with my new fancy for the whole grains which they can't refuse! 
I googled on some recipes for kids using Jowar/Jonnalu/Sorghum. I came across a video where an elderly lady was preparing fritters with Jowar Flour. That certainly caught my eye. So I tried the proportions which were shown in the video. That was like 1 cup Jowar flour +4 cups  Rice flour. I made a small test batch and they were pretty good and the kids finished it all up in a flash and were waiting for more! So for the next batch I decided to alter the proportions and make it with equal quantities. And they sure turned out pretty good. But since Jowar flour has no gluten, the dough breaks up easily. But since my plan was to break up the ribbons into small pieces, I thought the proportions might not matter after all and went ahead with it. Just as I imagined, they were breaking up pretty easily as they were being dropped into oil. So if anyone is particular of the whole twirly-ribbon shape then they might want to stick to the original 1:4 recipe. My intention was to use more jowar flour so here is how I made ..




Ingredients - 


Jonna pindi /Jowar Flour/Sorghum Flour 1 cup
Rice Flour 1 cup
Salt as per taste
Mirchi Powder as per taste
Sesame Seeds 1 Tbsp
Hing 1/4 tsp
Ghee / Clarified Butter 2 tsp (Add more if desired) (Optionally use butter at room temp)
Oil for deep frying


Method Of Preparation  -


In a mixing bowl, add the jowar flour,rice flour, salt, mirchi powder, sesame seeds and ghee and mix well so the ghee is well incorporated.


Add water gradually to make a soft dough. 




Fill in the murukku press with the dough and I used the small ribbon plate as in the picture. 


Heat oil in a deep pan, and on medium heat use the murukku press to drop in ribbons of dough. Fry them until they get a golden brown hue. Drain them onto kitchen paper towels. Continue for the rest of the dough.


Store in an air tight container upon cooling. 


This is sure to win the hearts of kids!

Makes approx 4-5 cups of murukku ribbons
