Buta Dali

Hope you loved the snack from Nagaland. Now it is time for us to move on to Odisha or formerly, Orissa. I identify Odisha from their dance form, Odissi and also the famous Puri Jagannath temple.

Their culture is very close to Bengali and Assamese and so they share a similar cuisine. Here this Buta Dali is also made in Bengal and Assam as I understand. I have also come across variations of Buta Dali and this one was favored at home.

While you check out if this version of Buta Dali works for you, I shall have to go to Pondicherry now to make sure all is well with that post! See you there!

Recipe Source - here
Ingredients -

Channa Dal 1/2 cup
Pumpkin  1/2 cup cut into chunks with skin
Potato  1/4 cup cut into chunks
Ginger  1/2 inch grated
*Onion  1 small chopped (Optional - I didn't use)
Tomato  1 chopped
Turmeric powder  1 tsp
Sugar  1/2 tsp
Red Chili powder  1 tsp
Salt as per taste
Roasted Jeera and Dry Red chill powder to garnish
Seasoning (Ghee/Oil 1 Tbsp, Panch Phoran 1 tsp, Tej Patta 1, Dry red chili  2 broken, Cinnamon  1/2 inch)

Buta Dali

Method Of Preparation -

Soak the Chana Dal for about 2 hours.

In a pressure cooker, heat ghee/oil and add the seasoning ingredients. Fry them for about 30 seconds. Saute onions (if using).

After the onions are sauteed, add ginger, tomato, potato and pumpkin. Also add the soaked and drained chana dal. Add turmeric, red chilli powder and sufficient water to it and pressure cook.

After the pressure is released from the cooker, mix well and garnish with roasted cumin powder and red chilli powder.

Serve hot with Roti/Puri or rice.

Preparation Time soaking time 1-2 hrs + cooking time 25 min
Serves 3-4
