Poha Dhokla

After enjoying the beaches in Goa, lets go over to Gujarat, known as the 'Jewel of the West'. Gujarat reminds me of some great stalwarts like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel.

But personally, the stories told by my mom from the time they lived in Dwaraka, the coastal city, stand out most in my mind.
My parents lived there during the Indo-Pak war in 1971. Apparently, they had to undergo rifle training and all the other mechanics which were common practices in a war zone. Lights out during the night was a common thing too.

It was very exciting for us, as kids to listen to all the war time stories which my mom had to tell us. But I must say, it was not easy on them to go through the war time routine!

By the way, don't we all associate Dhoklas with Gujarat? At least I do. Check out these healthy, instant dhoklas made with Flattened rice flakes/Poha while I smooth your way into Haryana.

Recipe Source - here
Ingredients -

Poha / Flattened Rice / Atukulu , coarsely crushed 1/2 cup
Sooji / Semolina / Rava 1/2 cup
Yogurt / Curds 1 cup
Water 1 cup
Green Chilli Paste as needed
Salt to taste
ENO Fruit Salt 1 tsp
Seasoning (Oil 1 Tbsp, Mustard seeds 1 tsp, Asafoetida a pinch)

Poha Dhokla

Method Of Preparation -

Combine the Yogurt/curds with water to make buttermilk.

Mix in the beaten poha, sooji, green chilli paste and salt into the buttermilk.

Just before steaming, add the ENO fruit salt, mix gently and pour into a greased steamer plate.

Steam for 10-15 minutes.

While the steamer is cooling down, heat oil in a small pan, add mustard seeds and asafoetida.

After the mustard seeds crackle, pour the seasoning on to the steamed dhoklas. Slice it according to requirement and serve with chutney of your choice. I served with Green Chutney.

Preparation Time 25 min
Makes 15-18 pieces
