Makhana Peas Curry

Here is another rich gravy from the northern states of India. I wasn't able to narrow this dish down to a particular state. So decided that this could be classified generally under North Indian Rich Gravies.

Check out this delicious gravy for Day 3, Week 2 of BM #40.

Ingredients -

Phool Makhana / Popped lotus seeds / Fox nuts 1 1/2 cups
Green Peas 1 cup
Turmeric 1/2 tsp
Salt, Red Chilli Powder, Garam Masala, Coriander Powder as needed
Kasoori Methi/Dried Fenugreek leaves 1 tsp
Seasoning (Canola Oil 2 Tbsp, Cloves 3-4, Cinnamon 1 inch, Cardamom 1-2 pods, Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp, Asafoetida couple pinches)
For the Gravy -
Onion, chopped 1/2 cup
Tomato, chopped 2 cups
Green Chillies 2-3 (or as needed)
Coriander leaves few
Ginger 1 inch piece
Garlic 3-4 cloves
Cashews handful

Makhana Peas Curry

Method Of Preparation -

In a heavy bottomed pan/kadai, roast the makhana on medium flame until they are crisp. Set aside.

In the same kadai/pan add one tablespoon of oil and saute the onions until translucent. Add in the ginger, garlic, green chillies and tomato and cook until the tomatoes are mushy.

Remove and make into a fine paste adding the cashews and coriander leaves as well.

In a kadai, heat oil and add the seasoning spices listed and pour the paste and cook until the oil oozes out.

Add salt, red chilli powder, garam masala, coriander powder and add the peas (I used frozen peas). Add water to adjust the consistency of the gravy. Cook for a couple minutes.

Add in the roasted makhana, mix well and let it simmer for a couple more minutes.

Remove from fire, garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

Serve warm with Roti/Naan.
